Five Food Groups

Aunt Millie's Avocado Burger

As soon as the outside temperature reaches 60°F, doors and windows all over the Midwest fly open, and shorts, tank tops, and flip flops come out of storage. The temperatures keep climbing, and no one wants to go back inside. These magical months are filled with frisbees, swimming, and impromptu family softball games. The days are made of dirty feet and sun-bleached hair.

And what’s that smell? It’s coming from the grill.

Ah, burgers.

Summer days are nonstop fun, but all that fun needs energy to sustain it. We still have to eat. The great thing about a sandwich, any sandwich but especially a burger, is that you can get all five food groups into one food.

Of course, we start with the bun. That gives you your grains—plus a bunch of vitamins like niacin, thiamin, etc. Aunt Millie’s buns are the best, and you don’t have to take our word for it anymore.

Then, you’ll need a burger (or you’re going to have to call your sandwich something else). That gives you your protein. Your burger doesn’t have to be made of beef. Maybe you’re a turkey burger gal. Or do you look to the sea and fill your bun with salmon or ahi tuna? If you eschew meat altogether, make a burger out of black beans or bulgar wheat and mushrooms. Whatever you put between the buns is a burger in our book.

Next, you’ll want some lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, maybe an avocado if you’re feeling fancy. That covers your fruits and vegetables. (Those are two different food groups now.)

Slap a piece of cheese on there if you want. This food group is optional so we can keep our vegan friends in the game.
